Cellulite, it has a habit of greeting us in fitting rooms, where the 3 angled mirrors and harsh fluorescent lighting reintroduce us to areas of our bodies that we had forgotten about over winter. And there we stand in the tiny cubicle, being intimately re acquainted with our buttocks and thighs glowing creamy soft and dimpled like the phosphorescent moon.
Not quite sure what to do or where to look, and not yet convinced that the buttocks and thighs actually belong to us, we either head straight to the gym, or we go home to sink into the lounge and lose ourselves in a bowl of coconut ice cream and watch the Note Book for the 20th time, because we know that Ryan Gosling would create a shrine to that cellulite and bathe it in rose water, every night, loyally for the rest of his life, because that's the sort of guy he is. Sigh..
So what can we do about it? If we listen to the incessant hoo haa in glossy magazines or late night infomercials it's as easy as handing over $99.95 for the latest coffee bean infused super serum or using the pummelling massage electro shock roller that will only cost you $19.95 and a few bruises every month for the rest of your life. And will they have any true long term effect? Hardly.
And I say this to you with cellulite swag authority, as I have researched like the Sherlock Holmes of cellulite over the years, even written a 400+ page book devoted to the subject as I was sick and tired of seeing friends and clients being taken for a ride with expensive creams and treatments that didn't address the issue from the inside out. So while it's not 400 pages, I'm happy to give you 5 tips that just may just make your 3 way mirror fitting room expeditions much easier to bare, in fact if you truly take these tips on board you may be putting those tricky 3 direction mirrors to use, as you angle your camera to take bottom selfies ala Kim Kardashian. (please don't)
First things first - does it really matter?
At the end of the day, we are women with amazing bodies that can heal, nurture, give birth and a myriad of other wondrous and sacred things that one may think would render any concern about dimpling thighs as less than trivial, however that doesn't stop us from pumping millions of dollars into the dangling carrot quest for smooth toned skin does it. Call it human nature, or a social construct built upon years of manipulation via advertising and dollar signs, if at the end of the day it makes you feel less than fantastic, rest assured that you can do something about it, no gimmicks or expensive creams and lotions necessary.
Cellulite may understandably raise your concern when it causes you physical pain (which for many of us it does) and when it's the result of an unhealthy lifestyle, where the cellulite is a symptom of a body that is crying out for a detox. So in answer to the question at hand - 'does it really matter?' - on the one hand it doesn't matter at all, and on the other hand it matters a great deal, it just depends which hand you're looking at. Sounds like the sort of answer the Mad Hatter would give to Alice doesn't it! Our physical appearance doesn't make who we are, yet in many ways our appearance is intrinsically linked with our health.
Our lymphatic system is greatly overlooked and deserves just as much attention as our cardiovascular system as it is an integral part of our immune system, acting as our bodies waste filtration system, filtering out toxins and waste from our bodies. Unlike our blood which is pumped around our body via our heart, Our lymphatic system relies on movement to keep it moving, this is why keeping active is vitally important. One particular activity that is absolutely amazing for giving the lymphatic system a boost is rebounding.
The action of bouncing creates a g-force that can help to deeply cleanse our bodies at a cellular level and to assist the lymphatic system to work at its optimum. Rebounders are relatively inexpensive and are small enough to have sitting in your lounge room so you can bounce away for a few minutes each day while you keep an eye on your kids, or watch a movie. I have some great rebounding bellicon workout videos on YouTube that you may like to check out (here & here). If you would like to find out more about my rebounder and why I love it so much, you can read more about it here.
It's not necessary to be sloughing it out at the gym for hours every day to lose weight and cellulite. One of the most effective fat burning exercises can be done and dusted in just 20 minutes and you can spend half of that time walking! Interval training is incorporating short bursts of high intensity activity into your workout. For example power walking for 2 minutes then running fast for a minute, and slowing back down to the walk and repeating over 20 minute period. Short bursts of high intensity cardio exercise switches on the fat-burning process and after-burn effect, which gives us the biggest bang for our buck, less work for maximum effect.

Contrary to popular belief cellulite doesn't only affect those that are overweight. The true cause of cellulite comes down to the condition of our skin. The stronger your skin is the less likely it is to allow fat cells to pop on through creating the orange peel effect.
A diet high in fresh organic fruits and vegetables nuts and seeds provide our bodies with huge amounts skin nourishing vitamins and minerals that feed every single cell of our body, providing us not only with smoother more cellulite resistant skin layers, but also a beautiful healthy glow, stronger longer hair and nails, better digestion and superior hydration. Some of the easiest ways to get plenty of fruits and vegetables into your day are via smoothies and freshly squeezed juices.
Here's one of my favourite skin loving smoothies:
- 2 large ripe bananas
- 1 cup of frozen berries of your choice or a handful of goji berries
- 3 large handfuls of baby spinach
- 1 large glass of filtered / spring water.
This delicious blend provides your body with the nourishing and energising sugars from the ripe bananas, a skin loving antioxidant boost from the berries and a cleansing chlorophyll and strengthening protein hit from the spinach.
As with most things in life, from skincare to food, you are better of making it yourself so you know exactly what's in it. I'm often horrified when I look at the ingredients listings on poplar cellulite reactions creams and lotions, more often than not they contain ingredients that are not only damaging and ageing to the skin in the long term, they also contain known carcinogens that can soak right on through and straight in to our blood stream.
As I always say, what goes on the skin, goes within so educate yourself on how to create your own skincare products from 100% natural organic ingredients that can help to nourish and strengthen the skin deducting cellulite and stretch marks and better still aid in the prevention of new lumps bumps anilines from forming.
Here are some of the top cellulite busting oils:
Grapefruit oil (Citrus Paradisi)
Grapefruit is one of the most popular essential oils for cellulite reduction. It’s a lymphatic stimulant and helps with water retention. It has a toning and detoxifying effect. Avoid when pregnant.
Lemon (Citrus limonum)
Lemon stimulates circulation and aids in detoxification. Helps with digestive issues and water retention. Promotes clarity of thought and is antimicrobial.
Sweet Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)
Sweet fennel is not to be confused with bitter fennel oil, which should not be applied to your skin. Sweet fennel oil is beneficial for those struggling with obesity. It has a cleansing and toning effect, and helps with water retention. Avoid if pregnant.
Juniper (Juniperus communis)
Juniper is well known for its detoxifying ability. It also helps with water retention and increases circulation, making it a strong contender for cellulite reduction. Avoid if pregnant.
Lavendar (Lavandula angustifolia)
Lavender is one of the most versatile oils, and when diluted makes a beautiful perfume. Beneficial for a number of skin conditions, has an anti-infammatory effect, is soothing and healing, and lifts the mood.
Make your own 100% natural cellulite massage oil:
Cellulite Buster Blend (taken from my book Cellulite Can Kiss My Butt! pg 340)
- 16.9 fl oz (500ml) Base oil of your choice (I like jojoba, sweet almond or coconut oil)
10 drops juniper oil
10 drops sweet fennel oil
5 drops grapefruit oil
5 drops lavender oil
5 drops lemon oil
Massage is a wonderful way to give your circulation and boost and to increase lymph and blood flow in your cellulite trouble zones such as the hips thighs and butt. The optimal way to do this is immediately after your shower, towel off your body and be sure to leave the areas you want to massage a little damp as we want to trap the hydration into the skin by sealing over it with the oil.
Two of my favourite oils to use for massage are organic coconut oil and jojoba oil, and for those that have super dry skin you may like to try sesame or avocado oils. You can keep it simple and use an oil on its own or your may like to up the anti by adding a few drops of a pure essential oil. (see list of preferred oils above)
Always be sure to use a pure plant based oil, never and artificial fragrance oil as they are chemical based and are highly damaging to the skin. Place your fingers in a curled claw shape and using your fingers as though they are rakes, move them in circular motions over the skin.
I hope you can incorporate these tips in to your life, so they can have you glowing from the inside out. Beauty really is an inside job, from our cells to our thoughts.
